Yves Saint Laurent Volupte Liquid Color Balm in Devour Me Plum

I’m not into trying luxury beauty products. I have found that 9 times out of 10, they are just overrated and grossly overpriced. In fact, if it were not for my mom talking me into trying a few things, you’d probably never see a high-end product on this blog or on my social media accounts. Enter the Yves Saint Laurent Volupte Liquid Color Balm. I was genuinely curious about this one, so I was more than happy to give the YSL Volupte Liquid Color Balm a good go. Besides, Yves Saint Laurent does make amazing lip products.

In took me a little while to decide on a shade, but eventually, I chose Devour Me Plum. Devour Me Plum is described as a mauve nude, which I would say is pretty accurate. I was hoping it would be a little more plum and less nude, but it is a nice everyday color. Since this product has “balm” in the title, I was expecting something with a sheer wash of color. However, the YSL Volupte Liquid Color Balm is really opaque! I get nearly 100% opacity in one application.

YSL Volupte Liquid Color Balm

Before I get into my opinions on the product, here is what YSL has to say per Sephora’s site:

“Finally, a lip balm that offers full, radiant color. This breakthrough formula is packed with soothing shea butter, antioxidant-rich vitamin E, coconut water, and jojoba oil to soften fine lines and lip texture and lock in moisture while YSL’s Liquid Light technology delivers high-shine color. Lips are left perfectly soft, smooth, and lush with vibrant color.”

This stuff literally feels like water when you first apply it. The texture is extremely thin and watery, which is why I am so shocked by the color payoff. Furthermore, it feels very cooling, but not in the sense that it is minty. To be honest, that is my favorite thing about this stuff. It feels great on a hot day. For an hour or two after application, it has a slightly glossy finish. After that two hour mark, it becomes matte and the color leaves behind a stain. About an hour and a half later, the color is almost gone. This isn’t a long lasting product, but it stays on a lot better than a gloss without being as drying some lipsticks.

YSL Volupte Liquid Color Balm

YSL’s Volupte Liquid Color Balm is obviously supposed to be hydrating and it claims to soften the texture of lips. I didn’t quite have that experience. Before applying any lip color, I always exfoliate and apply a lip balm because my lips are always dry. I’ve found that it does cling to my dry patches and accentuates them more. I also wish it were more hydrating overall. My lips never feel fully moisturized while this is on.

In typical Yves Saint Laurent fashion, the packaging is beautiful and luxe. I love the lips on the outside that show you what the color inside looks like. The applicator is also shaped like a pair of lips, and it actually works pretty well because it easily allows you to reach all of the contours of your lips.

YSL Volupte Liquid Color Balm

I’m a little iffy on the YSL Volupte Liquid Color Balm. I like it for those “no makeup” makeup days for a quick wash of color. I just wish it were more hydrating and long wearing. It is good to carry in your purse if you want some color or to apply for running errands, but $32 is a bit steep for just that.
